  • For SGD 2 million in estate assets, missing bank, company or foreign records can delay distribution.

  • Ask for status and accounts in writing before making accusations.

  • Use Caira to draft beneficiary, executor or asset-holder document requests.

The Singapore probate workflow is document-heavy before it is emotional. A family may be grieving, but the Family Justice Courts process still needs the correct route, the right applicant, the will or no-will facts, death documents, estate information, and supporting papers. This guide is for families preparing to apply for a grant of probate or to understand when letters of administration may be the more relevant route. It is not estate-planning advice and does not decide who should inherit.

First decide whether there is a will

Start with the basic question: did the deceased leave a valid will, and does it name an executor who can act? If there is a will and an executor, the grant of probate workflow may be relevant. If there is no will, no available executor, or another problem with the executor route, the letters of administration page may need to be checked instead. Do not force the facts into probate just because the family found a document labelled will.

The original, signing facts, named executor, and current circumstances all matter.

Identify the applicant and family facts

Prepare the deceased persons full name, identification details, date of death, last address, marital status, family members, and relationship details. Then identify the executor or proposed administrator, beneficiaries, possible next of kin, and any person who may object. If there are overseas family members, minor beneficiaries, a blended family, or disagreement about the will, the workflow may become more complex. Keep the application file factual. Avoid writing accusations into the first document set unless they are directly relevant and supported.

Gather core documents

A practical probate file usually starts with the death certificate, original will if any, codicils if any, executor identification, applicant contact details, asset information, debt information, funeral or expense records where relevant, and family relationship documents. The official court pages should be checked for the current list of required documents, affidavits, schedules, searches, caveat checks, filing steps, and form names. Do not use an old family application as a template without checking the current court guidance.

Make an estate inventory

List bank accounts, CPF-related information where relevant, insurance, shares, vehicles, HDB or private property, overseas assets, business interests, loans, credit cards, tax issues, and personal items of meaningful value. Separate assets that clearly belong to the deceased from assets that may be jointly owned, nominated, held on trust, or outside the ordinary estate process. A probate application can be delayed when the family treats every asset as if it passes under the will without checking how that asset is held.

Useful Chinese labels

Useful labels for family folders include 遗嘱认证 for probate, 遗产管理书 for letters of administration, 遗嘱执行人 for executor, 遗产 for estate, 死亡证明书 for death certificate, 资产清单 for asset inventory, and 受益人 for beneficiary. Use these labels to organise papers and explain the process to relatives, but keep official filings aligned with the court language and current instructions.

A family document request

One executor can send a calm request: Hi everyone, I am preparing the estate documents for [Name], who passed away on [date]. Please send any copy of the will, death certificate information, bank or insurance letters, property records, debt statements, and contact details for immediate family members. Please do not remove or discard original documents. I will check the Family Justice Courts probate or administration workflow before filing anything. Thank you.

Common mistakes

Do not file a probate application when there is no usable will route without checking administration. Do not lose the original will. Do not hide a later will or codicil because it is inconvenient. Do not guess asset values where the form asks for proper information. Do not ignore caveat or search requirements if the official page requires them. Do not treat probate as a chance to rewrite the deceased persons wishes. And do not distribute estate assets casually before the authority and debts position have been checked.

Where Unwildered fits

Upload the will, death certificate, family tree, asset list, debt records, executor details, and questions. Unwildered can help build a probate or administration checklist, identify missing documents, and prepare issue questions before using the official Family Justice Courts workflow or seeking advice.
